Atlanta Utility Works Brownfield Redevelopment Project

In the early-1900’s, Atlanta Utility Works served as East Point’s manufacturing hub for farm equipment, fertilizer and mill machinery. More recently it has earned a reputation in the film industry, featured in the popular television series such as Ozarks and Stranger Things. We purchased the site in 2021 with plans to preserve the site by converting it into a working farmlet, brewery, taproom and events space. But that process begins with cleanup.

A brownfield site is defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a parcel of land that has been contaminated by industrial processes. The benefits of cleaning up brownfield sites are far reaching for local communities, especially in relation to environmental health and safety concerns like air and water quality.

In our case, we decided to partner with Cardno Environmental to ensure that our spaces are safe and environmentally restorative. This voluntary program involves three fundamental steps:

  1. Soil testing

  2. Removal of contaminated soil (responsible disposal)

  3. Replacing soil-depleted areas with new, healthy soil

Through this initiative we are removing contaminants from the local watershed and creating new usable land that displaces the need for new development sites, which, among other things, can help decrease vehicle miles driven by local residents, according to a recent EPA study.

Our Sustainability Efforts

Future Projects

Upgrading our recycling efforts through strategic partnerships.

We’re excited about our partnership with nearby SA Recycling to recycle all of our in-store aluminum waste.

Growing hyper-local ingredients through our shared food garden.

We feel so lucky to be collaborating with The Garden Queen in cultivating our shared food garden down at Atlanta Utility Works. We’ll be growing an array of fruits, vegetables and herbs to be used in our seasonal ferments and cheeses and cutting emissions from sourcing these ingredients in the process. This project is also intended to offer an educational setting for those of you interested in the healing properties of plants and how to care for them. You’ll find more details on our website: https://www.atlantautility.works/.
